Alec Mallery Essays (580 words) - Writing, Essay, Academic Writing

Alec Mallery Katie O'Neill WRTG 105 20 October 2017 Scholarly Writing Reflection Throughout college, scholarly writing is very important because most papers will have to be written in a scholarly fashion. Scholarly writing is what most of the essays that people write in college will be. Scholarly writing or academic writing can be described as writing that has been peer reviewed and a genre of writing used in all academic fields. This style of writing connects with me because since I started going to my writing class all of my essays focused on scholarly writing. Scholarly writing is a genre of writing that I am becoming more and more familiar with as I progress in this class. Since taking this course, I have learned a lot about the writing process and ways to make my writing more scholarly. The habit that I have changed in the class would be not taking too much time on a specific sentence and continuing on with my essay until I have finished the first draft then going back and editing it. This was a problem for me because I would spend an unnecessary amount on one sentence which would hold up the rest of my essay. Some of the things that I have learned so far would be how to analyze works, how to make a counterargument and how to correctly cite my sources without plagiarism. These are topics that I was not very familiar with before taking this class but now I am more familiar with these so now I can use them in my future works. These are some skills that I have learned so far that make my work more scholarly. After having this class for two months, my opinion on writing has changed. In high school, I did not have to write many essays and when I did they were not graded as tough as they are now so I thought writing essays were easy because I would always get good grades on them. After getting back my Sherman Alexie essay, I can say that is no longer the case. I realize now that I have to take my time on the essays and not type it up the night before like I used to do in high school. Now I find writing to be hard and more of a challenge but I believe this is a good thing. Through the first two months of going to the University of Scranton, I already have had to write multiple essays for different classes so going through the struggles of getting low grades will eventually help me get better for the future. My opinion on writing used to me that it was easy but I now find much more difficult. After taking this course for two months, I have learned many skills which I will be able to use in my future writing. This class also changed my opinion on writing because in high school I used to think writing was simple but now I think writing is much harder than that. Now that I have learned what scholarly writing is and the techniques to it, I will be able to use it in my future papers. Scholarly writing has affected my life because it has made me into a better writer that I can carry with me forever. I would define myself as a scholarly writer that is improving by eliminating bad habits and learning new techniques which has changed my opinion of writing.

legalizing Gay Marriages essays

legalizing Gay Marriages essays A little girl dreams of her wedding day from the first day of kindergarten. She imagines a beautiful white gown, a traditional religious ceremony, and a Hawaiian honeymoon. She envisions a long, happy marriage, a large family, and separation from her partner only at death. Unfortunately, today, this fantasy seldom becomes reality. Despite her desire to find someone whom she will love enough to pledge lifelong fidelity to, the law deems it inadequate. The reality of the situation is that the laws of every single state in America prohibit a fully legal marriage among the gay and lesbian community. The commitment and love that two same-sex partners may have for each other can not be formally expressed in marital ceremony simply because of their sexual orientation. The little girls dreams are shattered because her idea of a happy marriage happens to include a relationship with a partner of the same sex. Marriage has traditionally been defined as the union of one man and one woma n as husband and wife. This tradition must be substituted because gays and lesbians are people who happen to love others of the same gender and have the same needs for intimacy, comfort, and stability as the rest of the population. Marriage has been a central institution in so many peoples lives because it forms such an integral part of our own self-understanding. If we alter this traditional institution, we will welcome a controversial debate that affects the sensitive areas of family, sexual morality, and social justice. We must understand that marriage itself has already been through an arduous cycle of changes, and these changes must continue until it fully transforms into an institution suitable for all people. On the path to further marriages natural evolution, we must entitle gays and lesbians the inherent rights of marriage in order to promote equality among all individuals. Gays and lesbians desire to streng...

Improving the Shopping Experience at Target Essay

Improving the Shopping Experience at Target - Essay Example This paper will look at the overall shopping experience of customers at Target Corporation and suggest specific steps on how these experiences can be enhanced. In order to do this, this paper would want first to identify the distribution channels that Target uses. The following paragraph aims to acquaint readers with the different "places" used by Target to market its products. Place is one of the four essential components of a marketing mix. Place generally refers to the distribution channel of business organizations. It is irrefutable that "place" had evolved over time due to different external factors in the business environment. From small shops, retailers now sell products through malls, hypermarkets, supermarkets, and department store. The popularity and the commercialization of the internet marked the proliferation of dotcoms. Online presence now allows retailers to sell and market products to customers with a mouse click. Thus, in considering the overall shopping experience of a customer in Target, both of these channels should be considered. Target traces its root in 1902 when Michael Dayton opened a retail store called Godfellows in Downtown Minneapolis. From its humble beginning, the company is now the sixth largest retailer in the United States, lagging behind major players Wal-Mart, The Home Depot, Kroggers Sears Holding Corporation, and Costco. The company is also recognized as 27th on the list of Fortune 500 (Target Corporation 1). Target is typically viewed by customers as "having everything under one roof" as their products ranges from household goods, cosmetics, electronics, garments, books, grocery items. In order to enhance buying experience, Target retail shops usually brings together video rental store, pharmacy, portrait studio, one-hour processing lab, optical store, tire and oil change shop, and fast food outlets like Starbucks Coffee, Pizza Hut and Taco Bell. Unlike its competitors, the company recognizes itself not just a discount store but a discount department store by its more upscale store format and younger target market (Target Corporation 5). 3. Areas of Improvement Generally, customers who report excellent shopping experience at Target greatly appreciates the value brought about by lower prices, wide selection, and the convenience of finding everything under one roof. In terms of online shopping, Target is often complimented because of its website which is user-friendly and very easy to navigate. It should also be noted that Target delivers ordered products promptly, often sooner than its customer expects. However, as with other business organizations the shopping experience both on the Target's physical distribution channel and cybershop. 3.1 Customer Service One of the most common complaints of customers when shopping on Target's discount department stores and online stores is poor customer service. Customers report that the company's employees are less approachable, unaccommodating, and are sometimes rude. Others complain about the lack of employees to assist them in their purchases. In online stores, customers criticize the lack of knowledge of some of the customer representatives. This poor customer s
